MY REVIEW

Erica ‘Laney’ Lane has had a ‘friends with benefits’ relationship with celebrity photographer Jackson Wild since they were at high school.  Her parents’ divorce when she was a young teen is something which has left her vowing never to marry.  Laney’s tattooed heart and Jackson’s key are the symbols that bind this close relationship.  Although agreeing to give each other the freedom to date other people they are always there for each other.  They also have an understanding that if ever the right person came along and either of them did want to marry, then the physical side of their relationship would stop and they would simply be friends.  Their promise to each other seemed such an easy thing to make at the time, but now Laney’s current boyfriend, stockbroker Bryce Ricker has proposed over her birthday dinner.

As part of her birthday celebrations Jackson is about to take Laney camping in the Silver Mountains just outside New York, something which is his regular birthday treat.  Having her arrive in tears with chocolates, red roses and the news Bryce has asked her to marry him isn’t at all what he expected. Maybe they had an agreement, maybe he knew someday it would happen but now it has he’s not sure how he really feels about it.  One thing is certain though, he can’t commit to Laney in the same way Bryce has; monogamy is simply not his thing.

The two set off for their mountain trek, hopeful of sorting things out.  Both struggle, unable to separate what they should do and what they really want.  The weather takes a turn for the worse, accidents happen making a bad situation even worse.  They return home early barely speaking.

I really felt for both Laney and Jackson.  What a situation.  Everything was OK until potential marriage for one of them became a reality. That was the moment they began to realise exactly how important they were to each other.  That behind the friendship and the hot sex there was something else.  But Laney knew Jackson would never commit to just her and Jackson knows he can’t give her the kind of life she deserves.  The kind of life Bryce is offering.

Once again the Wild family became involved, trying to help Jackson make the right decision, to declare his real feelings or walk away. Laney too has decisions to make and suddenly the more she really thinks about her well mannered, totally accommodating Bryce, the more flaws she begins to see in his character. So when Bryce presses her for a response to his proposal, Laney suddenly knows exactly which man wants to spend the rest of her life with. All she needs to do now is tell him.

A hugely enjoyable read and a great third instalment to the After Dark series.

I would like to thank the author for a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
