MAY 2019 UPDATE…

This year has been particularly busy.  Back in February I learnt my forthcoming debut for Choc Lit/Ruby would be published in June.  Since then so much has happened. It has a new title –  ‘A Cornish Affair‘ – I’ve been working on edits, a cover has been chosen by Choc Lit’s Tasting Panel and the book will be published on 18th June.

Alongside this I have been working on a new novel, this time set on the south coast of Cornwall and featuring three families with close ties.  At the moment I’ve completed the first draft, gone through one complete revision and am about to start a second. Holidays in a week’s time will interrupt that process but I find time away is good as I’m able to reflect on what I’ve done and whether I can think of any improvements. And no, I will not be taking the manuscript away with me, well only in USB stick form (which I always carry with me when away from the house) but I’m not planning to go anywhere near a computer – honestly!    By the time I return I’ll be ready to get back to work again, and of course, publication day for ‘A Cornish Affair‘ will only be a week away.  All in all a busy time, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

headland8When I’m working on a novel, I try to take actual places or buildings as an inspiration.  They may end up with a fictitious name but it’s important I can actually ‘see’ the setting for my characters. In A Cornish Affair a hotel is central to the story.  Therefore when I began writing I looked for a suitable photo I could use.  One hotel on north coast of Cornwall which I was already aware of was The Headland which overlooks Fistral Beach.  The location, on a cliff overlooking the sea, was right but the building was totally wrong; red and beige brick, solid, square, it wasn’t anything like how I saw Cat’s ancestor Jago Menhenick’s creation.  I ran with it for a while, using the photo as my screensaver but it didn’t inspire.

Then, several month’s later while staying in Richmond for a few days I foundRichmond-wedding-2(pp_w900_h480) exactly what I was looking for. The Petersham Hotel, miles from
the coast, became the elegant Tarwin House Hotel with its wrought iron balconies and tower.  Jago had wanted to create a mansion to reflect his wealth in tin, copper and later china clay.  For him it had to be different; slightly alien to it’s environment. But most of all he wanted people to stop and admire this creation of his.  Built in 1865 The Petersham was described as ‘florid Italian gothic’. Various extensions have been added in the 1950s and 1970s – in line with the changes to my fictitious Tarwin House which had also been subject to extensions over the years.  All in all, it was a perfect match.

My current WIP is set on the south coast of the Cornish peninsula.  This time I’ve looked for inspiration in the landscape. A coastal estuary town which has been much easier to find. Every author has their own unique way interpreting sense of place when they write  and for me having something real I can relate to is essential if I am to bring a story to life.

So that’s it for May.  I’ll be back next month with more news….

Run Up to Valentine’s Day: Indulge yourself in a little fictional romance – Book Three -Wicked Game

Wicked-Game-Cover-MEDIUM-WEB

Wicked Game

Fashion designer Thérèse D’Alesandro has recently moved into Westhead Manor with daughter Felicia and stepson Marco. Joining forces with neighbour Ella Benedict, she is about to open a bridal boutique at Ella’s exclusive wedding venue Lawns at Little Court.

Marco has both the looks and charm to guarantee him any woman.  Any woman, that is, except the one he wants: Ella’s niece Charlotte.  Marco knows he should walk away as not only is she the most exasperating female he has ever encountered she’s currently in a relationship with rock star Christian Rosetti. But the chemistry between them is undeniable and sensing trouble brewing between Charlotte and the egotistical singer he is prepared to wait.

Charlotte’s cousin Lucy has discovered Christian’s guilty secrets – ones he has been keeping safely hidden from everyone. Determined to cause mischief and at the same time settle her own score with the arrogant star, she sets in motion a chain of events which eventually brings Marco and Charlotte together, much to Thérèse’s disapproval.

Thérèse’s husband Gianlucca has invited the granddaughter of an old friend to stay as a house guest while he undergoes heart surgery. Rossana Caravello is due to inherit the one of Italy’s premier vineyards on her twenty first birthday in September. Aware this would make an excellent addition to her husband’s international business portfolio, Thérèse plots to push the young heiress and her stepson together. Rossana is already besotted with Marco, but if the plan is to have any chance of success first she needs to get rid of Charlotte…

Wicked Game was originally published in 2013 as The Other Side of Morning.  It was the fifth and final book of my Little Court series but easily read as a stand alone novel.  During 2018 I carried out extensive rewrites and Wicked Game was published in January 2019.

Watercolours in the Rain Cover MEDIUM WEB

WATERCOLOURS IN THE RAIN

Watercolours in the Rain is the follow up to Summer Moved On.  We rejoin the three main characters – Jess, Talún and Lily – six years later.

Jess:  Six years ago Jess’s relationship with Talún Hansen was torn apart by one night of deception. He disappeared from Lynbrook village and she headed for university vowing never to let anyone break her heart again. Currently teaching in Oxford, Jess returns from holiday to an unexpected phone call and life changing news which eventually sees her returning home.

Talún : Six years on Talún Hawkeswood, as he is now known, is heir to his grandfather’s Norfolk farming empire. When he hears of trouble in the village due to Lynbrook Hall being put up for sale, going back is the last thing on his mind. But staying away is not an option either, because someone he owes so much to is about to lose their home and their livelihood.

Lily:  Splitting with her husband after her son Josh’s birth, Lily now works as part of an estate agency sales team.  She has always held onto her dream of finding a wealthy husband and a life of self-indulgence. When the sale of an important property brings her face to face with Talún, she realises despite the risks involved, the night they spent together six years ago could be the key to making those dreams come true.

As Jess, Talún and Lily return to Lynbrook and the truth about what happened that summer is gradually revealed, Talún finds himself in an impossible situation. Still in love with Jess he is tied into a trade off with Lily: his name and the lifestyle she craves in exchange for his son. And when a child is involved there is only one choice he can make…

Although part of a two book story, Watercolours in the Rain can easily be read as an independent novel.

VALENTINE’S DAY IS ALMOST HERE. A GOOD REASON TO INDULGE YOURSELF IN A LITTLE FICTIONAL ROMANCE…

Valentine’s Day is almost here.  A great time to treat yourself to a a taste of romantic fiction.  So if you’re looking something that has a great story and unforgettable characters and if you enjoy drama with your romance then there are a trio of great books just waiting for you. Over the next three days I’ll  be showcasing them all. Today it’s the turn of Summer Moved On , part one of my South Devon Duo

SUMMER MOVED ON

a0e31-81imft4sfdl-_sl1500_

Jess Hayden is a girl who seems to have it all. Currently studying for ‘A’ levels, she lives in middle class suburbia with father Leo and stepmother Amber.  But behind closed doors life isn’t as idyllic it seems. Leo is a hard taskmaster and Jess never seems to be able to do anything right.  Feeling Leo is too harsh with his daughter, Amber is always there for Jess acting as a barrier against all her father’s negativity.

Leo’s younger brother Rufus takes Leo, Jess and her boyfriend Zac to visit a pub he has just bought in the nearby village of Lynbrook. As they are leaving a local farmer, George Selby arrives and is intoduced but it’s his companion who takes all of Jess’s attention.  Dishevelled, unkempt and undeniably attractive, a Lothario reputation he apparently strives to live up to and Devil may care attitude, Talún Hansen is absolutely the kind of man Jess should steer clear of.  Given her reaction to him it’s just as well they won’t be meeting again.

Leo is unhappy at home and shares his feelings with young barmaid Lily in The Golden Hind where he eats lunch every day.  When she saves him from a mugging he hands her his business card and tells her to contact him if ever she’s in trouble.

When Lily turns up on their doorstep in tears saying she’s run away from an abusive partner, Leo automatically invites her to stay.  It’s not long before he is treating her like a second daughter, making Jess’s life even more miserable as he continues to draw attention to her shortcomings.  Leo’s generosity enables Lily to reinvent herself into a sleek fashionable young woman, but she is far from being the innocent she appears. Not only does she continually flirt with Leo, she’s soon set her sights on Jess’s boyfriend Zac.  Zac has few moral scruples when it comes to women (something Jess is totally unaware of) and Lily is far too much temptation.  It’s not long before Jess discovers what’s been going on resulting in an explosive argument between her and Lily.  But there is worse to come because Leo has told Lily family secrets that even Amber and Jess know nothing of.  And during their argument Lily reveals the most damaging one of all – a revelation which will bring huge changes to all their lives.

A besotted Leo, feeling betrayed on hearing about Lily’s involvement with Zac tells her to leave. Unable to live with her husband any longer Amber begins divorce proceedings. Jess relocates to Lynbrook to live with Rufus and a very different future. One which will ultimately bring her back into contact with Talún once more.

And if you think you’ve seen the last of Lily…

WICKED GAME – POST TOUR SOUND BITES

Now the dust has settled on the recent book tour for my latest novel Wicked Game, I thought it might be a good idea to share snippets of the thoughts of each of the reviewers who took part. No matter how many books I write, each new one is a unknown quantity. As a writer I spend a lot of hours in front of the computer with only coffee, music and the cat for company. It’s a long and sometimes frustrating journey but well worth all the hard work when you receive reviews like this. Thank you all for taking part and for enjoying Wicked Game.

AUDIO KILLED THE BOOKMARK   https://audiokilledthebookmark.com/

Such a compelling story full of romance, drama, mischief, and deceit!

A perfect escape for those of you who love the love, adore the drama, and live for the glamour! Recommended.

BEING ANNE   www.beinganne.com

Jo Lambert writes quite beautifully – her style is flowing and easy to read, her dialogue natural, her descriptions vivid. The characterisation is excellent too – wicked stepmother Thérèse is quite a piece of work, and you just know Kayte is trouble from the moment you meet her. I particularly liked Lucy – the spoilt heiress who actually has considerably more depth to her than it first appeared.

I very much enjoyed this one – a twisting and turning story set against a wonderful large canvas, and a totally engrossing world to disappear into for a few hours.

BOOKWORMS CORNER BLOG SPOT  https://bookwormscornerblogspot.com/

Drama, romance, suspense, family saga. Wicked Game falls into all of those categories.  The writing was nicely paced and the story kept me on my toes from page one to the end!

I really enjoyed the intricacies of the story and the Character development was incredible. Whether I liked them or not, I found that each character caught my attention and kept it as I was drawn through this intricate tale.

If you are looking for a palate cleanser from all the rich offerings of Christmas and the new year then I highly recommend this crisp, sharp read to set your reading new year off with a bang!

BROOK COTTAGE BOOKS   https://brookcottagebooks.blogspot.co.uk/

Joanna Lambert has woven a complex web of love, passion and a cracking story. Full of interesting characters, strong and smart women and a couple of villainous females who are intent on doing whatever it takes to get their own way, this wonderful saga will have you engrossed and you will be hooked from page one. Think Dynasty, Dallas and Falcon’s Crest all set in the UK!  Charlotte and Marco’s attraction jumps right off the page. That man is hot! And rich! And did I mention hot? I’d highly recommend Wicked Game!

CHELLS AND BOOKS REVIEW   www.chellsandbooks.wordpress.com

Jo Lambert’s writing is lovely, I felt like I was on set of a movie and right there in all the drama. The settings just fall from the pages to enveloping you. I will defiantly be seeking more books from Jo.

This book reminded me very much of Jackie Collins or a Danielle Steel.

DASH FAN BLOGSPOT   Dashfan81.blogspot.com

Wicked Game is a compelling story that will draw you in and capture your attention.
I can see this book as a tv saga, it has all the juicy underhanded games, vindictive characters, plenty of drama, sexual encounters, Betrayal, Family drama and characters you love to hate. See perfect tv!

If you enjoy Contemporary Romances that are gritty then you will really enjoy Wicked Game!

DEVILISHLY DIFFERENT BOOK REVIEWS    https://devilishlydeliciousbookreviews.wordpress.com/

The book was well-written. There was a big cast of characters, but I never thought the book suffered for that. In fact, it made it better. I really like the way Lambert writes. The book takes place in several different settings, but the way it was written gave me a clear picture of each place. I love when a writer can do that for me.

I highly recommend this read if you like family sagas with romance. This book will definitely pull you into the story from beginning to end.

FNM BOOKS   www.nzfnmblog.wordpress.com

This is my first book from Jo Lambert and I have to say it won’t be my last. A great drama filled romance that will leave you thinking about it days after you put the book down!

FOUND IN WORDS   www.foundinwords.wix.com/site

The characters, the setting, and the fact that it sounds like the plot of an episode for an exciting telenovela or an obscure soap opera on television.  I’ve probably said this a lot in my other reviews, but it’s true, I’m glad that I picked this book up and I’m sure if you do too, you won’t regret it.

Do yourself a favor and read this book!  Seriously, you won’t want to miss out on Jo Lambert’s writing.

LIKE HERDING CATS   https://likeherdingcatsblog.wordpress.com

Several storylines held my interest throughout this book and I enjoyed the mix of thriller, romance and was desperate to see where each character’s story led.  I was reminded of Jackie Collins’s novels as often the story telling would move around the lives of various characters, usually accumulating in a cross over of loves, lives and tragedy before the ending.

READ TO RECOVERY http://traveltorecovery.com/

This is a perfect book for any holiday you are planning as I couldn’t put it down whilst reading by the pool. I enjoy reading books that are by local authors and Jo Lambert lives in the town next to me.

THE WRITING GARNET   Thewritinggarnet.wordpress.com

I am impressed at the author’s ability to guarantee a reaction from her readers, I mean, I would be extremely surprised if anyone reading this ended up unfazed by the events in ‘Wicked Game’! I think I surprised myself by my own reaction to be honest!

A rollercoaster ride of emotion, drama, and intense discoveries – ‘Wicked Game’ trumps ‘Sunset Beach’ T.V. programme any day!

A belated thank you…

When I begin to collect my thoughts about a new book sometimes there are areas where I simply don’t have the expertise to write convincingly. Take my current WIP set on an estuary town in south Cornwall. There are three families central to the plot, one of them owning a vineyard. Now I have absolutely no idea what happens between grape and bottle so professional guidance was definitely needed. Fortunately we have a local vineyard only a ten minute walk from home so it was easy to book an appointment for a tour where I could view the processes, make notes and ask questions.

Rewind to 2012 when I embarked on The Other Side of Morning – now released under the title Wicked Game. Rock musician Christian Rosetti was one of the central characters and part of the plot saw him on tour throughout Europe. Now I had absolutely no idea about music tours, but I knew someone who did.

Jane Risdon has been a long term social media friend. We came together through our joint love of music and I was aware of the time she spent in LA working with some of the most famous stars in the music business. Who better then to advise on how to write the scenes I needed for this book?

She took time with me, answered my questions and gave me a huge amount of information which gave me a broad view of what touring with a rock musician entailed. Jane’s expertise was invaluable and enabled me to send Christian off on a ‘virtual’ European tour safe in the knowledge I actually knew what I was talking about!

In 2017 Jane collaborated with fellow author Christina Jones to create her own rock star Scott in Only One Woman, a romantic novel set against the backdrop of the 1960s music scene.

Two women, one love story.

June 1968. Renza falls head over heels for heartthrob guitarist Scott. But after a romantic summer together they are torn apart when Renza’s family moves away.

December 1968. On the night she believes to be her last, Stella meets Scott at a local dance. He’s the most beautiful boy she’s ever seen and if this one night is all they have, she’ll take it.

As the final colourful year of the sixties dawns, the question is: can there be only one woman for Scott?

Thank you Jane for all the support you’ve given me since we met on Facebook. You’ve been an amazing friend…

WICKED GAME IS ON TOUR 10TH – 16TH JANUARY 2019

DECEMBER UPDATE…

So here we are at the end of another year. 2018 has flown by and so much has happened during those twelve months. The biggest news, of course, is having my novel The Boys of Summer accepted by Choc Lit. and due for publication in 2019. Exciting times!

My current news is that Wicked Game, my latest novel, is due out on 7th January 2019 and currently available for pre-order on Amazon. Previously published as The Other Side of Morning (2013) , the fifth book in my Little Court Series, it has been reworked and can now be read as a stand alone novel.

And finally…

So it just remains to say, as 2018 draws to a close and we welcome in a new year, I would like to wish you all a very happy 2019 and hope the months head bring you everything you have hoped for.

Tomorrow I’ll be back on my blog, greeting the New Year with a few non-writing thoughts on 2018 and the coming year.

Best wishes Jo

NOVEMBER UPDATE…

30TH NOVEMBER, 2018

A whole month has passed since my last update. This year has flown by and it’s difficult to believe that from tomorrow there are only 31 days left in 2018.

I have a busy end to the year.  When I left work five years ago I honestly believed that settling down to full time writing would see me balancing my time properly.  No more would there be a day job which shunted my writing into evenings and weekends. No, life was going to be far less busy.  Of course, that simply hasn’t happened.

Now I am probably as busy as I was when working full time.  Of course there are days when the writing has to take a back seat. Dental and GP appointments, getting my hair done, meeting friends, shopping or going out with my husband for our regular Tuesday lunch dates – predictably there’s always some non-writing event cropping up.  Although I realised these things were a natural part of my life at first I found it frustrating.  I wanted to hit the targets I had set myself and at the time that meant getting as much writing in as I could. What I soon learnt, however, was that you can have writing overload and taking these intermittent breaks can actually improve your work.  You’re fresher when you come back to the PC. Your thoughts are clearer, you feel more enthusiastic and you have a clear map in your head of what happens next to move the story on.

Of course there is more to this new life than simply writing novels.  I also run an active blog and produce regular updates on my book website.  The blog – Jo Lambert – A Writer’s Journey  hosts a weekly Q & A session for writers, giving them an opportunity to promote their work. It’s also involved in publication date promos and book reviews for fellow authors.   Yes I do actually find the time to read!

As this month draws to a close my rewrite of The Other Side of Morning – now under its new title Wicked Game has just left the building for formatting.  Once again Jane Dixon Smith who has been with me since I published my very first book back in 2008, has produced a fabulous cover.

Wicked Game Cover MEDIUM WEB

Publication date is 7th January  I’ll be back to advise about pre-ordering a little later in the month. I also have a book tour commencing 10th January with Rachel’s Random Resources

The Boys of Summer, my debut for Choc Lit, is due out in 2019 and I should be getting down to edits in the New Year.

Other news in the run up to Christmas is that I have a Festive Offer on Summer Moved On and Watercolours in the Rain at 99p/99c each.  These are linked contemporary romances set in South Devon so you get two books for the price of one.

Jo Lambert Christmas Banner 2018

So at the moment with Wicked Game off my hands I’m able to give my full concentration to my current WIP, a contemporary coastal romance set in South Cornwall.  Currently sitting at 66,000 words, there’s still some way to go but I’m hoping to have the first draft ready just before Christmas.  Then I’ll take a break and be ready to start editing straight after we’ve welcomed in 2019.

And that just about winds up November’s news.  All that remains is for me to wish everyone reading this a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you in 2019!
